About the Institute

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) is the professional body for individuals working across the global commercial shipping industry. Founded in 1911 and awarded a Royal Charter in 1920, the Institute represents a worldwide network of maritime professionals.

ICS has 26 branches and 14 teaching centres globally, with around 4,000 Members and Fellows, as well as over 100 corporate members.

The Institute sets and examines professional qualifications, supporting the development of highly skilled professionals across the shipping industry. Members are committed to upholding the highest professional standards, reflected in the Institute’s motto:
“Our Word, Our Bond.”


Becoming a Member

Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE)

The primary route to membership is through completing the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE).

  • A total of seven subjects must be completed
  • Students typically complete these within five years (often sooner)
  • Each completed subject contributes towards your progression to membership

Exemptions

If you have relevant academic qualifications or industry experience, you may be eligible for exemptions. This can reduce the number of subjects you need to complete.

For advice on exemptions, you will need to provide evidence (e.g. degree certificates) for assessment.


Getting Started

To begin your studies with ICS:

  1. Register as a student with the Institute
  2. Select the subjects you wish to study
  3. Choose your preferred study method 
    (e.g. through the ICS Online Academy, supported online learning, self-study, or tuition via teaching centres)

Time Commitment

To complete the PQE:

  • You must pass seven examinations
  • The standard completion period is up to five years
  • Many students complete the programme in a shorter timeframe depending on their pace and commitments

Applying for Membership

Once you have successfully completed the PQE, you may apply for professional membership.

Application process:

  • Submit a membership application form
  • Provide support from two existing Members (MICS) or Fellows (FICS)
  • Your application will be reviewed by the ICS Controlling Council

Membership elections typically take place several times per year, and processing times may vary.
